Ring Settings and Styles Guide

Ring Settings and Styles Guide

The setting is everything that surrounds and holds your center stone. It determines how much of the diamond is visible, how much light reaches the stone, how secure the stone is, and how the ring looks from every angle. Understanding the main setting types makes the design conversation much easier.

Prong Settings

Prong settings are the most common engagement ring setting type. Metal claws grip the stone at multiple points around its circumference. The number of prongs (typically 4 or 6) and their style (round, pointed, heart, claw) affects both security and aesthetics. Prong settings expose the maximum amount of the diamond, allowing light in from all sides for optimal brilliance.

Bezel Settings

A bezel setting wraps the diamond in a continuous band of metal. It's the most secure setting type and creates a sleek, modern look. The trade-off is that the metal covers the diamond's sides, reducing light entry and slightly affecting brilliance. Bezels are particularly popular for oval, round, and emerald cut stones.

Pavé Settings

Pavé refers to small diamonds set into the band itself, held by tiny prongs or beads of metal. The stones are packed closely together so the metal beneath them is barely visible. This creates a "paved" surface of continuous sparkle along the shank. Micro-pavé uses very small stones for a delicate effect; standard pavé uses slightly larger stones for more visible sparkle.

Channel Settings

In a channel setting, stones are set between two parallel rails of metal, with no prongs or beads holding individual stones. The channel protects the stones' edges, making this a durable choice for everyday wear. It's common in wedding bands and eternity rings, and occasionally used in engagement ring shanks for a clean, structured look.

Halo Settings

A halo setting surrounds the center stone with a ring of smaller diamonds. It amplifies the center stone's apparent size and adds overall sparkle. Traditional halos follow the outline of the center stone from above. Hidden halos are set below the center stone, visible from the side but not from above.
