How to Choose an Engagement Ring Band
The band is the part of the ring that wraps around the finger — and while it often gets less attention than the center stone, the band has a significant impact on how the ring feels to wear, how it looks from different angles, and how it pairs with a future wedding band.
Band Width
Band width is measured in millimeters. For most engagement rings, the band ranges from 1.5mm (very slim and delicate) to 3mm (substantial and prominent). The right width depends on the size of the center stone and the wearer's hand size. A large stone on a very thin band can look top-heavy; a small stone on a wide band can look unbalanced. Our designers will guide you toward a proportion that works.
Band Profile
The profile is the band's cross-sectional shape. A flat band has a consistent rectangular cross-section — modern and clean. A rounded band (also called court or comfort-fit) is slightly curved on the inside and outside for improved wearability. A knife-edge band tapers to a ridge along the top, creating a distinctive silhouette from the side.
Band Finish
High polish is the most traditional finish — reflective, bright, and classic. Matte or satin finish is more modern and understated. A combination of finishes (polished edges with a matte center, for instance) adds dimension. The finish also affects how visible daily wear marks are — matte finishes hide fine scratches better than high polish.
Band Metal
18K white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold all have different appearances and care requirements. White gold requires periodic rhodium replating to maintain its color. Yellow and rose gold are more resistant to showing wear in their appearance. Platinum is the most durable but also the heaviest. Your designer can help you weigh the trade-offs based on your lifestyle and priorities.
Plain vs. Set Bands
A plain band focuses all attention on the center stone. A pavé or channel-set band adds continuous sparkle along the shank. The choice comes down to whether you want the band to contribute to the ring's overall sparkle or to serve as a clean, simple frame for the center stone.
