Aftersales Care
A well-made piece of fine jewellery will last generations with the right care. The guidance below applies to all pieces made at Diamond Ateliers — engagement rings, Si Dian Zuan sets, wedding bands, and other diamond jewellery.
Everyday Care
When to remove your ring
Remove fine jewellery before: swimming (chlorine and saltwater both affect metal and can loosen settings), gym and contact sports, gardening and manual work, sleeping, and applying lotions, sunscreen, or perfume. The oils and chemicals in these products build up in settings and dull the appearance of diamonds over time.
Skin products and jewellery
Hand cream, sunscreen, soap, and sanitiser are the most common causes of film build-up on diamond jewellery. A thin layer of lotion on a diamond’s surface reduces its brilliance noticeably. Put your jewellery on last when getting ready, and take it off first when washing your hands.
Storing your pieces
Store jewellery pieces separately to avoid scratching. Gold and platinum are soft enough to be scratched by other jewellery, and diamonds will scratch other stones and metal surfaces. Fabric-lined jewellery boxes with individual compartments or pouches are ideal. Do not store multiple pieces loose together in the same drawer or bag.
Cleaning at Home
The right method
Fill a small bowl with warm (not hot) water and a small amount of mild dish soap. Soak your ring or piece for 20 to 30 minutes. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush (a baby toothbrush works well) to gently scrub around the setting and under the stone, where build-up concentrates. Rinse thoroughly under running water — hold the piece, not the stone, and make sure the plug is in. Dry with a soft lint-free cloth.
What to avoid
Do not use toothpaste, baking soda, or any abrasive cleaner — these scratch metal. Do not use bleach or chlorine-based cleaners, which can damage gold alloys and loosen settings. Do not use ultrasonic cleaners at home without knowing whether your specific stone is safe in one — some treatments and some stones (emerald, for example) can be damaged by ultrasonic vibration. Diamonds are generally safe in professional ultrasonic cleaners, but home devices vary in quality and intensity.
How often to clean
Wipe your ring with a soft cloth daily — a quick wipe after removing it removes surface oils before they build up. A full cleaning with water and soap every two to four weeks is sufficient for most wearers. If you use your hands intensively for work, more frequent cleaning may be necessary.
Professional Servicing
Annual inspections
We recommend bringing your piece in for a professional inspection once a year. During an inspection we check the security of all prongs and settings (including pavé halo stones, which can loosen with wear), inspect for any damage to the metal, and perform a professional clean that restores the piece to its original condition.
Annual inspections are particularly important for halo settings and any design with multiple small diamonds, as small pavé stones can work loose before their loss is noticed.
Replating white gold
18K white gold is plated with rhodium to achieve its bright white colour. Over time, with everyday wear, this rhodium plating wears away and the warmer yellow-white tone of the gold alloy becomes visible. This is normal and expected — it is not a defect.
Replating restores the ring to its original bright white appearance and takes less than an hour. We recommend replating whenever you notice the colour of your white gold ring beginning to warm — typically every one to three years, depending on how the piece is worn. Platinum does not require replating.
Prong retipping
Prongs wear down over years of everyday contact. A prong that has worn thin can fail suddenly, releasing the diamond it holds. Prong retipping — adding metal to the tip of a worn prong to restore its height and hold — is a routine service that prevents stone loss. This is typically addressed during an annual inspection if needed.
Repairs
What to do if a stone falls out
Stop wearing the ring or piece immediately to avoid losing other stones or causing further damage. If the fallen stone is recoverable, keep it safely. Contact us as soon as possible — the sooner we see the piece, the easier and less costly the repair typically is. For guidance on what to do in this situation, see our full guide here.
Resizing
Ring sizing needs can change over time. We offer professional resizing for rings we have made. Resizing feasibility depends on the design of the ring — some designs (full eternity bands, certain pavé designs) are difficult or impossible to resize without significant rework. Please contact us to discuss your specific piece before assuming resizing is straightforward.

Lifelong Resizing
Over time, hands naturally change, and we understand that your ring may no longer fit exactly as it once did. We offer lifelong resizing within a range of ±2 ring sizes, subject to the guidelines below.
Standard Resizing
- Complimentary resizing is limited to one resize per ring per year
- Minor variations of ±0.25–0.5 size often fall within natural daily finger fluctuation and may not require resizing
- A settling period may be recommended before proceeding with adjustments
- Resizing involves cutting, reshaping, and rejoining the band; repeated or incremental resizing may result in subtle changes to proportions or finish
Extensive Size Adjustments
Size changes beyond ±3 ring sizes are considered extensive alterations. At this range, standard resizing is not recommended, as it may significantly affect the ring’s proportions, balance, and structural integrity.
In such cases:
- Partial or full remaking of the ring may be required
- Additional costs may apply depending on design complexity and materials
- Final proportions may differ from the original design to ensure durability and comfort
We will always advise the most appropriate approach to achieve a secure, balanced, and long-lasting fit.
Design & Material Limitations
- Full Eternity Diamond Rings are not resizable due to their continuous stone setting
- Colored stones set in the band may require removal prior to resizing due to heat and pressure involved
- Complimentary resizing does not include re-engraving; existing engravings near the resized area may be partially affected

Lifelong Maintenance
Stones rarely fall out of its ring, but in case they do, we have you covered as well. Just come back to our store and we will replace it for you*.
*does not apply to center stones

Lifelong Polishing
Polishing is a periodic restoration service, not an on-demand cosmetic touch-up.
Light surface marks appear naturally with daily wear and are a normal part of owning fine jewellery. For longevity and structural integrity, polishing is not recommended within the first 30 days of wear, and should generally be performed no more than once every 6–12 months under normal usage.
Each polishing removes a fine layer of precious metal. Excessive polishing may soften design details, reduce prong definition, and shorten the lifespan of the ring. For this reason, polishing requests are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Complimentary polishing is limited to one time within the first 12 months. Additional polishing requests may be chargeable.
For early wear or light marks, we recommend ultrasonic cleaning and inspection, which restores brilliance without removing metal.
🛠 Aftercare Servicing & Scheduling
To ensure every piece receives proper care and attention, all aftercare services — including cleaning, inspection, polishing, and resizing — are scheduled services.
Weekends (Saturday & Sunday) are our peak consultation days and are dedicated primarily to bespoke appointments. As such:
- Aftercare services are not offered as walk-in, same-day services on weekends
- Same-day turnaround (e.g. “30-minute cleaning”) is not available on Saturdays and Sundays
- Aftercare appointments are best scheduled on weekdays for smoother handling and faster turnaround
This allows our craftsmen to properly inspect and care for your jewellery without rushing, ensuring long-term quality and safety.
