Platinum vs White Gold: Which Should You Choose for Your Engagement Ring?
Platinum vs White Gold: Which Should You Choose?
The two metals look nearly identical in a jewellery display case, and for many clients the difference feels abstract. The honest answer is that it depends on your lifestyle, your sensitivity to ongoing maintenance, your budget, and the specific diamond you are setting.
The Key Differences
Colour longevity: Platinum stays naturally white forever. White gold is yellow gold alloyed and rhodium-plated to appear white — the plating wears off over time (typically every two to three years) and requires replating to maintain its colour.
Durability: Platinum is more dense and scratch-resistant over decades. When platinum is scratched, metal is displaced rather than lost. White gold loses small amounts of metal with each scratch.
Cost: Platinum is significantly more expensive — both in material cost and in craftsmanship, as it requires higher temperatures to work. For most clients, white gold offers excellent value and performance.
Our Recommendation
For D-F colourless diamonds, platinum is the preferred setting because it reflects no warmth into the stone. For G-H near-colourless diamonds in any budget-conscious context, 18K white gold is an excellent, practical choice.
