Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: What Singapore Couples Actually Need to Know

At some point in almost every consultation at Diamond Ateliers, the question comes up: "Should we go lab-grown or natural?"

It's a fair question. Lab-grown diamonds have changed significantly over the last few years — in quality, in availability, and especially in price. And the answer isn't the same for every couple.

Here's an honest comparison. No agenda. We work with both.

First: Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?

Yes. Full stop.

Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds. They're not cubic zirconia, not moissanite, not simulants. They're carbon crystals grown in a controlled environment — using either High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) processes.

A gemologist cannot tell them apart with the naked eye. Even advanced equipment often can't distinguish them without specialised testing. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades lab-grown diamonds with the same 4Cs system it applies to natural stones.

The Price Difference Is Real — and Significant

This is usually what drives the conversation.

A lab-grown diamond typically costs 50–75% less than a comparable natural diamond. A natural 1-carat round brilliant with good cut, G colour, VS2 clarity might cost SGD 8,000–12,000. The lab-grown equivalent might cost SGD 2,000–4,000.

That's a meaningful difference. Some couples use it to:

  • Allocate more budget to the setting or metalwork
  • Size up to a stone they couldn't otherwise afford
  • Keep total spend lower while still getting a beautiful ring

Others use the savings to invest in the honeymoon, home, or wedding itself. There's no wrong answer.

What Natural Diamonds Have That Lab-Grown Don't

Rarity and provenance.

Every natural diamond formed under extreme heat and pressure over billions of years. That geological history is real and irreproducible. For some people — particularly those who value what something is beyond what it looks like — that matters.

Natural diamonds also tend to hold their value better over time. Lab-grown diamond prices have dropped sharply over the past three years as production has scaled. A natural stone purchased today is likely to retain more of its resale value over a 20-year horizon.

That said, most engagement rings are not sold. They're worn for decades and passed down. For the majority of couples, resale value is a secondary consideration.

What Lab-Grown Diamonds Have That Natural Don't

Accessibility at a given quality level.

With a lab-grown diamond, you can often achieve a noticeably better stone — in cut quality, colour, and clarity — at a lower price point. A couple with a SGD 4,000 diamond budget who chooses lab-grown might access a 1.5ct excellent-cut stone with E/F colour and VS1 clarity. The same budget in natural might result in a smaller, lower-clarity stone.

For couples who prioritise size and visual impact, lab-grown often makes more sense.

What About Grading?

It matters — regardless of which type you choose.

Always buy a certified diamond. For natural diamonds, GIA is the most respected grading laboratory globally. For lab-grown diamonds, IGI has become the industry standard, though GIA now grades lab-grown stones as well. GCAL is a third option known for its optical performance report.

At Diamond Ateliers, we only work with certified stones. We review the certificate with every client before any purchase is confirmed.

Which Do Singapore Couples Actually Choose?

At Diamond Ateliers, we see a genuine split.

Couples who choose natural diamonds often cite tradition, sentiment, or the significance of a stone formed over billions of years. Some have parents or grandparents who wore natural diamonds and want that continuity.

Couples who choose lab-grown often cite practicality — they'd rather put the savings toward the home or wedding — or a preference for a larger, visually impactful stone at their budget. Some specifically appreciate that the stone wasn't mined.

Neither group is wrong. Both groups end up with beautiful rings.

Our Honest Take

Don't decide based on what sounds more impressive at a dinner party. Decide based on what matters to you.

If the origin of the stone carries personal or emotional significance, choose natural. If you care more about cut quality, visual presence, and value at your budget, lab-grown may serve you better.

In either case, what matters most — by far — is the cut. A well-cut stone of either type will outshine a poorly cut stone every time. Cut is the one factor where there's no compromise worth making.

If you'd like to compare both options side by side before making a decision, that's exactly what our consultations are for. Here's how the process works — no pressure, no obligation.
