What Actually Happens When You Commission a Custom Engagement Ring at Diamond Ateliers
Most people come to us having never commissioned anything custom before. They've seen rings on Instagram, maybe walked through a jewellery store, and somewhere along the way decided they want something different — something made specifically for the person they're proposing to.
The idea makes sense. The process feels opaque.
This article is our attempt to fix that. Here is exactly what happens when you commission a ring at Diamond Ateliers — from the first message to the moment you open the box.
Step 1: The First Conversation (Free, No Obligation)
Everything starts with a consultation at our studio in The Centrepoint, Orchard Road. It costs nothing, and there's no pressure to commit to anything on the day.
What we're doing in this first session is listening. We want to understand:
- Who the ring is for — her style, her lifestyle, whether she's told you anything
- What you have in mind — a shape, a reference photo, a feeling, or nothing at all
- Your timeline — whether you're working toward a specific date
- Your budget — and what's realistically achievable within it
Most people arrive with one of two things: a screenshot from Instagram, or a blank page. Both are fine starting points. We're very good at reading between the lines.
What you won't get in this consultation is a hard sell. We're not commissioned salespeople. We're the people who will actually design and make your ring, which means our interest is in getting it right — not in closing a transaction.
Step 2: Design & Stone Selection
Once we understand your brief, we move into the design phase. This is where most people are surprised by how specific it gets.
We discuss every detail that will shape the final ring:
- The stone — shape, carat, cut grade, colour, clarity, natural or lab-grown
- The metal — platinum, 18K white gold, yellow gold, or rose gold
- The setting — solitaire, halo, pavé, three-stone, tension, bezel
- The prongs — claw style, number, whether they should be pointed or rounded
- The band — width, thickness, profile, any engravings
- The finish — high polish, satin, brushed, or a combination
We'll show you stones in person so you can see how different specifications look in real light — not just on a grading report. A 1.0ct F VS1 and a 1.0ct H SI1 can look almost identical face-up. We'll show you why, and help you decide where your budget is best spent.
For many clients, this is the session that changes everything. They arrive thinking they want one thing and leave with a clearer, better-informed idea of what will actually make the ring beautiful.
Step 3: The 3D Render — You See It Before It Exists
Once the design brief is agreed, we produce a detailed AI-assisted 3D render of your ring before a single gram of metal is touched.
You'll see the ring from every angle — the setting, the stone proportions, the band width, the prong style. If anything needs adjusting, we adjust it at this stage. The render is revised until you're completely happy with what you see.
Crafting only begins once you've signed off.
This step matters more than most people initially realise. A ring is a permanent object. Changes made on paper cost nothing. Changes made to a finished ring can cost significantly more, and some cannot be made at all. The render eliminates the gap between imagination and reality.
Step 4: Crafting (6 to 12 Weeks)
Once the design is approved and a deposit is placed, your ring enters production.
Most rings are completed within 6 to 12 weeks, depending on complexity. Throughout this period, we keep you updated on progress. There is no black box — no weeks of silence followed by a finished product you've never seen in progress.
If you've told us you're working toward a specific date — a birthday, a trip, a planned proposal — we build the timeline around that. We have never missed a client's deadline.
During crafting, your ring goes through:
- Wax carving or CAD production of the setting
- Casting in your chosen metal
- Hand-finishing and polishing
- Stone setting
- Final quality inspection
Every ring that leaves our studio has been through multiple checkpoints. We say no to shortcuts — even when clients wouldn't notice them — because the standard isn't about what's visible. It's about what we're willing to put our name on.
Step 5: Collection
When your ring is ready, you come in to collect it in person.
This isn't just a handover. We sit down with you, walk you through every detail of the finished piece — the cut, the setting, the finish — and answer any questions. Most clients describe this as the best part of the entire process.
We'll also walk you through aftercare: how to clean the ring, what to avoid, and when to bring it back for its complimentary annual polish and check-up.
The ring is delivered with its diamond certificate (GIA, IGI, or GCAL depending on the stone), a detailed receipt of specifications, and our warranty documentation.
What It Costs
Custom engagement rings at Diamond Ateliers start from SGD 2,000. Most couples invest between SGD 3,000 and SGD 8,000 depending on the stone, the metal, and the complexity of the setting.
You are not paying for a showroom, a mall location, or a commissioned salesperson. Every dollar goes into the ring itself.
The first consultation is always free. We'll be honest with you about what's achievable at your budget — including when a different approach might serve you better.
Common Questions We Get Before the First Appointment
Do I need to know what I want before I come in?
No. The most common starting point is "I have no idea." Bring a reference image if you have one, but don't worry if you don't. That's what the consultation is for.
Can I surprise my partner with a custom ring?
Yes, and we do this regularly. Bring us a photo of jewellery she already wears, a sense of her lifestyle, and any details she's dropped. We're experienced at building a brief from very little information.
What if I don't like the render?
We revise until you do. The render exists precisely so you don't have to commit to something you're not certain about. No ring enters production without your explicit sign-off.
Can I come in with my partner?
Of course. Some couples design the ring together. Others prefer the element of surprise. Both approaches work — we'll follow your lead.
The Simplest Way to Start
Book a free consultation. Come in with whatever you have — a reference, a budget, a date you're working toward, or simply a decision that you want to do this properly.
The first conversation costs nothing. Most people leave knowing exactly what they want.
