How Much Does a Custom Engagement Ring Cost in Singapore? (The Honest Answer)
The most common question we get, usually in the first five minutes of a consultation: "How much does this typically cost?"
It's a fair question. And unlike many jewellers, we'll give you a direct answer.
The Short Answer
At Diamond Ateliers, custom engagement rings start from SGD 2,000. Most couples spend between SGD 3,000 and SGD 8,000. Some projects go higher — typically when the diamond itself is larger, rarer, or both.
The most important thing to understand: the diamond almost always accounts for 60–80% of the total cost. The setting — metalwork, prongs, band, finishing — typically costs SGD 800 to SGD 2,500 depending on complexity.
What Drives the Cost of the Diamond
Four variables move the price of a diamond significantly.
1. Carat Weight
Price increases non-linearly with carat weight. A 1.5ct stone doesn't cost 50% more than a 1ct stone — it typically costs 80–120% more, because larger stones are rarer. If budget is a constraint, consider 0.9ct or 1.4ct stones, which are often priced well below the round-number thresholds.
2. Cut Quality
This is the most important factor in how a diamond looks, and it's also the one most worth spending on. An excellent-cut 0.9ct will look more brilliant than a good-cut 1.2ct. Cut quality has the smallest impact on price relative to its impact on appearance. Never compromise on cut.
3. Colour
Diamond colour is graded D (colourless) to Z (visibly yellow). For white metal settings (platinum, white gold), colour grades G–H are typically indistinguishable from D–F to the naked eye and cost significantly less. For yellow or rose gold settings, you can go as low as I–J with no visible warmth.
4. Clarity
Most inclusions in VS2 and SI1 stones are invisible without magnification. For most clients, spending extra to reach VVS clarity is not necessary. Eye-clean VS2 is a sweet spot that balances beauty and value.
Natural vs Lab-Grown: The Single Biggest Lever
Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 50–75% less than natural diamonds of comparable quality. A natural 1ct G/VS2 excellent cut might cost SGD 8,000–12,000 as a loose stone. The lab-grown equivalent might cost SGD 2,000–4,000.
This single decision has a bigger impact on your total budget than any other. If your priority is a visually striking stone and you're flexible on origin, lab-grown unlocks significantly more at any given price point. If origin and rarity matter to you, natural is worth the premium.
What the Setting Costs
The metalwork at Diamond Ateliers starts from SGD 800 for a simple solitaire. More complex settings — halos, pavé bands, intricate prong work, engravings — typically run SGD 1,200 to SGD 2,500. We work in 18K gold (yellow, white, and rose) and platinum.
We can design anything you have in mind. More unusual designs or significant customisation may incur additional design fees, which we'll quote transparently before any work begins.
What Most Couples Actually Spend
Here's an honest breakdown based on our clients:
- SGD 2,000–3,500: Lab-grown diamond 0.7–1ct, excellent cut, simple solitaire or tension setting
- SGD 3,500–6,000: Lab-grown 1–1.5ct with halo or pavé, or natural 0.5–0.8ct excellent cut
- SGD 6,000–10,000: Natural diamond 0.8–1.2ct excellent cut with designed setting, or lab-grown 2ct+
- SGD 10,000+: Natural 1.2ct+, premium colour/clarity, complex bespoke setting, or fancy shapes
There Is No Right Number
We've made beautiful rings at SGD 2,200. We've made unforgettable rings at SGD 15,000. Both couples were happy.
The best ring isn't the most expensive ring. It's the one designed with the wearer in mind — the proportions right for her hand, the setting suited to her style, the stone chosen for its brilliance rather than its price tag.
At Diamond Ateliers, we work transparently with your budget. We'll never push you toward a stone you don't need, and we won't pad the setting to make up margin.
The first consultation is free. Here's what to expect when you come in — most couples leave with a clear plan and a number they're comfortable with.
