Cushion Cut Diamond Guide: Soft, Romantic, and Built to Sparkle
What Is a Cushion Cut Diamond?
The cushion cut — sometimes called a pillow cut — is a square or rectangular diamond with rounded corners and large, open facets that produce a distinctive chunky sparkle pattern. It is one of the oldest diamond cuts still in widespread use today, with roots in the old mine cut that dominated the nineteenth century, before modern cutting technology made the round brilliant possible.
What makes the cushion cut immediately recognisable is its soft, approachable silhouette. Unlike the sharp corners of a princess cut or the precise geometry of a step cut, the cushion has an organic quality — its rounded edges feel warm rather than architectural. This character is reflected in the nickname: the pillow cut. It is one of the most requested shapes at Diamond Ateliers among clients drawn to romantic, vintage-influenced jewellery.
Cushion Cut vs Old Mine Cut: Understanding the Heritage
The cushion cut's ancestor is the old mine cut, which was the dominant diamond shape from the seventeenth century until the early twentieth. Old mine cuts were cut by hand to maximise carat retention from rough diamonds, resulting in a high crown, small table, and large open culet — a very different profile from modern diamonds. When viewed under candlelight, old mine cuts produced a soft, fiery, romantic sparkle unlike anything modern cutting achieves.
The modern cushion cut is not an old mine cut, but it inherits the same warm, chunky aesthetic. True antique old mine cut diamonds are available for clients who want genuine vintage provenance. For clients who want the cushion look in a new stone, the modern cushion delivers it consistently.
The Two Types of Cushion Cut
When shopping for a cushion cut diamond, you will encounter two distinct facet arrangements that produce meaningfully different visual results:
Standard Cushion Brilliant
The standard cushion brilliant has larger facets that produce the classic cushion sparkle: chunky, blocky flashes of light rather than the fine, even sparkle of a round brilliant. This is the more vintage-feeling version, closer in character to old mine cuts. The larger facets are also more transparent, which means clarity and colour show more readily in this variety.
Cushion Modified Brilliant ("Crushed Ice")
The crushed ice cushion has a different internal facet arrangement that produces thousands of tiny, overlapping light flashes rather than the chunky pattern of a standard cushion. Viewed face-up, it resembles crushed ice or water — an endlessly shimmering, almost liquid sparkle pattern. This variety is more brilliant and hides inclusions and colour very effectively, but has a different, more modern personality.
Neither type is objectively better — they are genuinely different aesthetics. The best way to understand the difference is to see both side by side in person.
Length-to-Width Ratio: Square or Rectangular?
Cushion cuts come in near-square and rectangular proportions. A square cushion (ratio 1.0 to 1.05) is the most popular choice, maximising the pillow-like silhouette. A rectangular cushion (ratio 1.10 to 1.20) is slightly elongated and can be flattering on wider fingers while retaining the rounded corners and cushion character.
Colour and Clarity for Cushion Cuts
Colour
Standard cushion brilliants show colour more readily than crushed ice cushions. For a standard cushion in white gold or platinum, aim for G or H colour. Crushed ice cushions are more forgiving — H or I in white gold often looks excellent due to the internal scintillation masking body colour effectively.
In yellow gold, some clients deliberately choose I or J colour for a standard cushion — the warmth of the stone and the metal work together beautifully.
Clarity
For a standard cushion brilliant, VS2 is a reliable minimum. For a crushed ice cushion, SI1 can often be eye-clean — the complex internal facet arrangement conceals inclusions effectively. Always evaluate the actual stone in person rather than relying on the grade alone.
The Cushion's Sparkle in Different Light Conditions
One of the cushion cut's most distinctive qualities is how its sparkle changes with the light. In direct sunlight or under spotlights, a standard cushion produces large, brilliant flashes. In lower, warmer light — a candlelit dinner, indoor ambient lighting — it produces a fiery, romantic glow that round brilliants and step cuts cannot replicate. If you spend time in warm, ambient-lit environments, the cushion may actually look more beautiful in your daily life than a round brilliant, which performs best under strong directional light.
Best Settings for Cushion Cut Diamonds
Solitaire with Claw Setting
Four or six prongs on a fine band is the most classic cushion cut setting. A slightly wider band — 2–2.5mm — tends to balance a cushion better than an extremely fine band, as the cushion's silhouette carries more visual weight than a round brilliant.
Pavé Band Solitaire
Flanking the cushion with small pavé diamonds on the band is one of the most popular cushion ring designs. The additional sparkle complements the chunky flash of the cushion centre stone, and the combination reads as romantic and luxurious.
Halo Setting
A cushion cut in a halo is one of the most requested designs we make at Diamond Ateliers. A square halo accentuates the cushion shape; a rounded halo softens the overall look further. Both work beautifully — the choice comes down to whether you prefer something more geometric or more organic.
Vintage Milgrain Settings
The cushion cut's heritage makes it a natural pairing with vintage-inspired design details: milgrain edges, engraved gallery rails, and filigree under the setting. If you are drawn to Art Deco or Edwardian-inspired jewellery, the cushion cut is the most natural centre stone choice.
Cushion Cuts in Lab-Grown Diamonds
The cushion cut is one of our most popular shapes in lab-grown diamonds. Both the standard cushion and crushed ice varieties are available, with identical character to natural stones of the same specifications. Because cushion cuts are often chosen in sizes of 1.5ct and above — where the silhouette really comes into its own — the cost saving of a lab diamond at that size is particularly significant.
Is the Cushion Cut Right for You?
The cushion cut suits clients who want a diamond with warmth, personality, and romantic character. It is an excellent choice if you love vintage jewellery, if you want something with heritage and depth, or if the cushion's soft silhouette simply appeals to you more than sharper shapes. It is less suited to clients who prefer a very modern, graphic look — for that, a step cut or round brilliant in a minimal setting will be more satisfying.
