Coloured Gemstone Engagement Rings Singapore: Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald

The assumption that an engagement ring must feature a white diamond is a relatively recent convention. For most of jewellery history, coloured gemstones — sapphires, rubies, emeralds — were the stones of choice for the most significant rings. The British royal family has used sapphires, rubies, and emeralds in their engagement jewellery for centuries. It was the 20th century diamond industry that made the colourless diamond the default. In 2026, that default is being questioned again — and we are designing more coloured gemstone engagement rings at Diamond Ateliers than ever before.

Why Choose a Coloured Gemstone for an Engagement Ring?

Meaning and personalisation. A birthstone, a favourite colour, or a stone with specific symbolism carries a layer of intention that a white diamond cannot. A sapphire for someone born in September. A ruby for a partner whose favourite colour is red. An emerald because green is the colour of a place that matters to your story. The colour becomes part of the ring's narrative.

Visual impact at a lower price. A 2ct blue sapphire of excellent quality costs a fraction of a 2ct white diamond. This means clients who want a visually substantial stone can achieve it within a more accessible budget — or direct the savings toward a more elaborate setting.

Distinctiveness. The proliferation of round brilliant solitaires means that an engagement ring with a coloured centre stone is immediately distinctive. For clients who value individuality, this matters.

Sapphire Engagement Rings

Blue sapphire is the most popular coloured gemstone choice at Diamond Ateliers, and globally. Sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale — second only to diamond — making it an excellent choice for a ring worn daily. It does not scratch easily and holds its polish over decades.

Blue sapphires range from pale cornflower blue to deep royal blue to velvety midnight blue. The most prized colour is an intense, vivid blue without grey undertones — sometimes called "Kashmir" or "Ceylon" blue depending on origin. Lab-grown sapphires offer the same physical properties as natural sapphires and are available in the most saturated blues at accessible prices.

Pink sapphires are our second most popular choice — a vivid pink that reads differently from morganite (which tends toward a peachy tone) and differently from ruby (which is deeper and redder). Pink sapphire has a freshness and femininity that many clients find compelling.

Yellow sapphires are gaining traction among clients who want the warmth of yellow gold but in the stone itself. A vivid yellow sapphire in a yellow gold setting has a confident, sunny quality that photographs beautifully.

Ruby Engagement Rings

Ruby is the red variety of corundum — the same mineral family as sapphire — and shares the same excellent hardness (Mohs 9). A vivid, pigeon-blood red ruby is among the most valuable gemstones in the world, but lab-grown rubies offer the same saturated colour at a price point that makes a ruby centre stone accessible.

Ruby pairs most naturally with yellow gold — the warmth of the metal amplifies the red of the stone. White gold or platinum creates a more dramatic contrast, making the red appear more vivid against a cool metallic background. We have designed ruby rings in both configurations and both are striking.

One consideration with ruby: the stone's deep colour means that clarity inclusions are less visible to the naked eye than in lighter coloured stones or white diamonds. This gives more flexibility on clarity grade without visible compromise — which is partly why rubies have always been considered stones of passion rather than precision.

Emerald Engagement Rings

Emerald is the most romantically complex of the three. Its deep green — ranging from a bright spring green to a dark forest tone — is unlike any other stone. Emerald rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, which is softer than sapphire or ruby, but still appropriate for daily wear with a protective setting.

Nearly all natural emeralds contain inclusions — what the trade poetically calls "jardin" (garden). These inclusions are accepted and expected in emeralds in a way they would not be in diamonds or sapphires. A high-clarity emerald is exceptionally rare. For clients who prefer a cleaner stone, lab-grown emeralds offer significantly better clarity at a fraction of the natural price.

Emerald pairs beautifully with yellow gold, which historically has been the traditional setting for the stone. White gold or platinum settings make the green appear cooler and more modern. Rose gold gives the ring a distinctly contemporary feel.

Combining Coloured Gemstones with Diamonds

Many of the most beautiful coloured gemstone rings at Diamond Ateliers feature a coloured centre stone with diamond accents — a pavé band, a diamond halo, or diamond shoulder stones. The white diamonds amplify the colour of the centre stone by contrast and add brilliance to the overall design. A blue sapphire surrounded by a micro-pavé halo of white diamonds is one of the most visually spectacular combinations we create.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are coloured gemstone engagement rings durable enough for daily wear?

Sapphire and ruby (both corundum, Mohs 9) are excellent choices for daily wear — second in hardness only to diamond. Emerald (Mohs 7.5–8) is softer but appropriate for daily wear in a protective setting such as a bezel. We will advise on the best setting for each stone's specific hardness during your consultation.

Should I choose a natural or lab-grown coloured gemstone?

Both are physically identical. Natural coloured gemstones — particularly fine rubies and sapphires from certain origins — carry a provenance premium that lab-grown stones do not. For clients who prioritise size, colour saturation, and clarity at the best value, lab-grown is an excellent choice. For clients who want a stone with geographic origin and the full provenance of nature, natural is the answer. We carry both.

Can I pair a coloured gemstone with a diamond band?

Yes — and it is one of our most popular combinations. A blue sapphire with a micro-pavé diamond band, or a pink sapphire with a high polish diamond-accented setting, creates a ring with extraordinary visual depth. The white diamonds amplify the colour of the centre stone rather than competing with it.
