What Is Pavé? A Guide to Pavé Engagement Ring Settings
Pavé (from the French word for "paved") is a setting style where small diamonds are set closely together across the surface of a ring's band, held by tiny prongs or beads of metal, with the metal beneath them barely visible. The result is a band that appears to be continuously covered in diamonds — a surface of uninterrupted sparkle that runs along the shank of the ring.
It is one of the most popular engagement ring settings we work with at Diamond Ateliers, and one of the most variable — "pavé" covers a wide range of execution styles, diamond sizes, and coverage options. Understanding the variations helps you specify exactly what you want rather than hoping the jeweller's interpretation matches yours.
How Pavé Is Set
The diamonds in a pavé setting are small — typically 0.01ct to 0.05ct each. They are set into the metal surface using one of two techniques:
Bead setting (traditional pavé): The jeweller carves small seats into the metal, places each diamond, and raises tiny beads of metal from the surface around each stone to hold it in place. The beads are then polished smooth. This is the traditional pavé method and produces a more organic, slightly textured surface.
Prong setting (pavé with shared prongs): Tiny prongs are used instead of beads, shared between adjacent stones to hold each row in place. This is cleaner and more precise, and is increasingly the preferred method in high-quality contemporary pavé work.
Pavé Variations
Full Pavé
Full pavé covers the entire band with diamonds all the way around the finger, including the inside. This produces maximum sparkle but has a practical trade-off: the diamonds on the inside of the band are in direct contact with the skin and take the most direct wear, which can cause them to work loose over time. Full pavé requires more frequent maintenance checks than half or three-quarter pavé.
Half Pavé
Half pavé covers the top half of the band with diamonds, tapering off or stopping before the underside of the ring. This is the most practical option for everyday wear — the diamonds are protected from the underside of the band where contact and wear are most intense. From the front and sides, a half-pavé ring looks as fully set as a full pavé ring.
Three-Quarter Pavé
Three-quarter pavé extends further around the band than half pavé, typically stopping just past where the ring is visible when worn. It provides more coverage and sparkle than half pavé while keeping the most vulnerable section of the underside plain.
Micropavé
Micropavé uses very small diamonds — typically 0.01–0.02ct each — set in a very dense arrangement. The result is a more delicate, refined sparkle than standard pavé. Micropavé is particularly popular on slim bands (1.5–2mm wide) where the fine stones create an almost glittering effect. The trade-off is that the small stones require highly skilled setting work and can be more difficult to replace if one is lost.
Pavé Band Widths
The width of the band significantly affects how the pavé reads on the hand. A narrow pavé band (1.5–2mm) creates a delicate frame around the centre stone — the diamonds add sparkle without visual weight. A wider pavé band (2.5–3mm+) creates a more substantial presence and can be a design statement in its own right.
For most solitaire engagement rings at Diamond Ateliers, we recommend a half-pavé band of 1.8–2mm as the most practical and elegant default. It adds meaningful sparkle, holds up well in daily wear, and complements a wide range of centre stone sizes without competing for attention.
Two-Tone Pavé
One of the most popular customisations in our bespoke work is setting white diamonds into a yellow gold or rose gold band. The contrast between the warm metal tone and the white diamonds creates a visual depth that a single-metal pavé band cannot achieve. The warm metal beneath the stones makes them appear to float, and the colour contrast adds dimension.
A yellow gold band with white pavé diamonds is one of our most requested combinations — it works beautifully with both lab-grown and natural diamonds and suits a wide range of personal styles.
Pavé Maintenance
Pavé bands require more maintenance than plain bands. The small stones can work loose over time, particularly with daily wear. We recommend an annual check with your jeweller to confirm all stones are secure. At Diamond Ateliers, we offer complimentary annual maintenance checks for every ring we produce.
If a pavé stone falls out, have it replaced promptly — an empty setting can catch on fabric and damage the remaining stones or the setting itself.
Is Pavé Right for You?
Pavé is right for you if you want continuous sparkle along the band, if you appreciate detail and craftsmanship, and if you are prepared for slightly more maintenance than a plain band requires. It works with virtually every centre stone shape and suits both traditional and contemporary ring designs.
If you want maximum durability with zero maintenance, a plain polished band or a bezel-set band is more appropriate. But for most clients who ask about pavé, the combination of sparkle and elegance is worth the trade-off.
