What Is a Marquise Cut Diamond?

The marquise cut is a distinctive diamond shape with two pointed ends and a curved middle — an elongated, football-shaped silhouette that is unlike any other cut in the standard repertoire. It is one of the oldest named diamond shapes, said to have been commissioned by King Louis XV of France in the eighteenth century to mimic the shape of the Marquise de Pompadour's lips.

Whether or not the origin story is apocryphal, the marquise has remained in continuous use for over two centuries because it does something very specific very well: it makes both the diamond and the finger wearing it look dramatically longer.

What Makes the Marquise Distinctive

Size Efficiency

The marquise has one of the largest surface areas per carat of any diamond shape. Because its mass extends outward toward the two points rather than downward into depth, a marquise appears noticeably larger face-up than a round brilliant of equivalent carat weight. A 1.0ct marquise can appear as large as a 1.2–1.3ct round from above. For buyers who prioritise visible size, the marquise is one of the most efficient shapes available.

Finger Elongation

Worn with the points aligned north-south along the finger, the marquise's elongated silhouette visually extends the finger. This is the same effect as the oval and pear shapes, but more pronounced — the marquise's sharp points create a stronger directional line than the rounded ends of an oval.

The Bow-Tie Effect

Like most elongated shapes, the marquise can exhibit a bow-tie shadow — a dark band across the centre of the stone caused by light leakage. In well-cut marquise diamonds, the bow-tie is minimal and not distracting. In poorly cut stones, it can be a very obvious dark stripe that significantly diminishes the stone's beauty. Always view a marquise in person or via high-resolution video before purchasing — the bow-tie cannot be assessed from a certificate alone.

Choosing a Marquise: Grades and Proportions

Length-to-Width Ratio

The most classical marquise proportions fall between 1.75:1 and 2.25:1 — significantly more elongated than an oval. Ratios below 1.75:1 produce a stubbier, less characteristic silhouette. Ratios above 2.25:1 create a very elongated, blade-like stone that looks dramatic but can read as fragile. Most clients are happiest in the 1.85:1 to 2.1:1 range, though personal preference and finger width should guide the choice.

The Wing Points

The two pointed ends of a marquise are its most vulnerable areas. The thin tip can chip under impact if unprotected. V-shaped prongs are essential at both points — never a flat or round prong that leaves the tip exposed. This is standard practice at Diamond Ateliers but worth confirming with any jeweller you work with.

Colour and Clarity

The marquise is a brilliant cut, so its facet pattern is relatively forgiving of colour and clarity compared to step cuts. G–H colour is an excellent choice in white metal settings. For clarity, VS2 or SI1 eye-clean is typically sufficient — brilliant cutting hides inclusions well. The wing tips can concentrate colour slightly, so staying at G or better is worth the modest premium if the stone is above 1.2ct.

Setting Styles

Solitaire

A marquise solitaire — the stone held by two V-prongs at the tips and two side prongs at the widest points — is a very confident choice. The shape is striking enough that it needs no supporting elements. This is the traditional marquise setting and the most timeless option.

Halo

A halo of small pavé diamonds around a marquise creates a dramatic, almost vintage-inspired look. The halo emphasises the silhouette of the centre stone and adds considerable presence. A marquise halo reads as more romantic and elaborate than a solitaire.

East-West

Setting the marquise horizontally across the finger — east-west orientation — is an increasingly popular modern choice. Instead of the stone pointing north-south and elongating the finger, it points across the finger and reads as a bold, wide graphic element. The east-west marquise is a genuinely contemporary look that reads as original.

Is the Marquise Right for You?

The marquise suits people who want a ring that reads as maximally distinctive — not a shape everyone expects, but one with a clear point of view. It suits longer fingers equally well as shorter ones, though for very different reasons: on a longer finger, the elongation is elegant; on a shorter finger, the lengthening effect is flattering. It suits people drawn to drama, history, and the less obvious choice.

If your partner tends toward classic and restrained, the marquise may be too distinctive. If they have ever expressed interest in something unusual or vintage-inflected, the marquise is worth serious consideration.
