Article: How Long Does a Bespoke Engagement Ring Take in Singapore?

How Long Does a Bespoke Engagement Ring Take in Singapore?

This is one of the most common questions we receive, and one of the most important to answer honestly before you book a consultation. The short answer: allow three to five weeks from the point of design confirmation to collection. The full process from first enquiry to ring in hand typically takes four to eight weeks. Here is exactly what happens at each stage and what affects the timeline.

The Bespoke Timeline at Diamond Ateliers

Stage 1: Initial Consultation (Week 1)

The process begins with a consultation — either in person at our studio or, for overseas clients, via video. This is the design conversation: we discuss the diamond shape, metal type, setting style, any Signature Touches, and the overall aesthetic you are trying to achieve. We show you physical samples of band profiles, prong styles, and metal finishes. By the end of this session, most clients have a clear direction.

If you come in knowing exactly what you want, the consultation can be as short as 45 minutes. If you are exploring from scratch, an hour to an hour and a half is more realistic. There is no rush — this is the most important conversation in the entire process.

Stage 2: Diamond Selection (Week 1–2)

We source diamonds based on the specifications discussed in the consultation: shape, carat weight range, cut quality, colour, clarity, and certification. For standard round brilliants and ovals, we can typically present options within two to three business days. For rarer cuts — Asscher, old mine cut, rose cut — sourcing may take slightly longer.

Diamond selection can happen at the consultation itself if the client has clear specifications, or at a second appointment where we present physical stones for comparison. Seeing diamonds in person, rather than selecting from specs on paper, consistently produces better decisions.

Stage 3: Design Confirmation and Deposit (Week 2)

Once the diamond is selected and the design is finalised, we produce a digital rendering or sketch of the ring for your approval. This is the point at which you confirm the design and pay the deposit. Production begins immediately after confirmation.

For clients who want to see a wax model before the metal is cast, we can arrange this — add approximately one week to the timeline.

Stage 4: Production (Weeks 3–5)

This is where the ring is physically made. The production sequence: wax model carving or CAD design → casting in the chosen metal → initial metalwork and shaping → stone setting → finishing and polishing → quality inspection. Most rings are completed within three to four weeks of production start. Complex designs with intricate pavé, multiple stones, or unusual structural elements may take four to five weeks.

Stage 5: Collection (Week 5–8)

We contact you when the ring is ready for collection. You inspect the ring with us present, and any final adjustments — minor sizing refinements, finishing preferences — are addressed at this visit. The ring comes with its diamond certificate, care instructions, and our aftercare documentation.

What Can Extend the Timeline

Rare diamond sourcing: Specific cuts, very large carat sizes, or unusual colour specifications may require extended sourcing. We will always tell you upfront if your requirements are likely to take longer to fulfil.

Design complexity: Intricate pavé work, multiple coloured stones, complex structural elements, or wax model approval stages all add time. A simple solitaire can be made faster than a multi-stone cluster with a pavé twist band.

Wax model approval: If you want to see and approve a wax model before casting, add approximately one week. We recommend this for first-time bespoke clients who want maximum confidence before the metal is committed.

Rush Timelines: What Is Possible

We understand that proposals do not always follow a neat eight-week schedule. For clients with a specific proposal date, we will always try to accommodate your timeline. Rush production is possible for simpler designs — a clean solitaire can sometimes be ready in two to three weeks from confirmation. Complex designs are harder to rush without compromising quality, and we will always be honest with you about what is achievable without cutting corners.

The most important thing: contact us as early as possible. Two months before the proposal is ideal. One month is workable. Two weeks is challenging. Two days before is a conversation we will have, but may not be able to resolve to the standard we hold ourselves to.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I collect the ring faster if I already know what I want?

Yes. If you arrive at the consultation with a clear design in mind and are able to confirm quickly, production can begin almost immediately. The limiting factor is then the production timeline, which is typically three to four weeks. Clear and decisive clients consistently receive their rings fastest.

What happens if the ring is not ready by my proposal date?

This has not happened to us — but if unforeseen circumstances delayed a ring, we would contact you immediately and present solutions. For clients with fixed proposal dates, we build contingency into the production timeline from the start. If your date is non-negotiable, tell us at the first consultation and we will plan accordingly.

Do I need to come in person, or can the whole process be done remotely?

The full process can be conducted remotely for overseas or time-constrained clients. We conduct design consultations via video, share diamond options with video and photography, send design renderings digitally, and can ship the completed ring securely. For Singapore-based clients, we strongly recommend at least one in-person visit for diamond selection — seeing stones in person makes a significant difference to the quality of the decision.
