GIA vs IGI Diamond Certificates: What the Difference Actually Means
A diamond certificate is a grading report issued by an independent gemological laboratory. It documents the stone's cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight, along with measurements and other characteristics. The certificate does not add value to a stone — it documents what is already there. But which laboratory issued the certificate matters, because different labs apply different standards.
In Singapore, the two certificates you will encounter most often are GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and IGI (International Gemological Institute). Here is what the difference actually means for your purchase.
GIA: The Industry Reference Standard
GIA is widely regarded as the most rigorous grading laboratory in the world. Its 4Cs framework — cut, colour, clarity, carat — is the standard the entire industry uses. When the trade refers to a diamond as a "G VS2," it means graded to GIA standards, regardless of which lab actually issued the certificate.
GIA's Grading Consistency
GIA is known for consistency and conservatism. A G colour from GIA will reliably be a G colour. A VS2 clarity from GIA will reliably have inclusions consistent with that grade. This predictability is why GIA certificates command a premium: buyers and sellers can transact with confidence because the grades mean what they say.
GIA and Lab Grown Diamonds
GIA began grading lab grown diamonds in 2020. As of 2023, GIA issues full 4Cs grades for lab grown diamonds on the same scale as natural stones. GIA-certified lab grown diamonds are available in Singapore but represent a smaller share of the market than IGI-certified stones.
IGI: The Dominant Lab Grown Certifier
IGI is the most widely used certification body for lab grown diamonds globally, and this is reflected in the Singapore market. The majority of lab grown diamonds sold in Singapore — including those we source for bespoke commissions at Diamond Ateliers — carry IGI certificates.
IGI's Grading Standards
IGI's grading is generally considered slightly more lenient than GIA for both natural and lab grown diamonds. In practice, this means an IGI G colour may occasionally be a GIA H, and an IGI VS2 may occasionally be a GIA SI1. The gap is typically one grade on colour and occasionally one grade on clarity — not dramatically different, but real.
Why IGI Dominates Lab Grown
IGI established relationships with lab grown diamond producers early and built the infrastructure to grade large volumes at competitive turnaround times and prices. For a segment growing as quickly as lab grown diamonds, this positioning made IGI the default.
What the Grade Difference Means in Practice
For most buyers in Singapore, the GIA vs IGI question comes down to this: when buying an IGI-certified stone, apply a small mental adjustment to the stated grades — assume the stone may grade one step lower under GIA standards — and evaluate the price accordingly.
For natural diamonds at higher price points — where a one-grade difference in colour or clarity translates to thousands of dollars — GIA certification provides more reliable assurance. For lab grown diamonds, where prices are lower and the grade premium for a GIA certificate may not be justified, IGI is the market standard and generally reliable.
Other Certificates You May See
HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant) is a Belgian laboratory with a reputation similar to GIA for consistency. GCAL is a US-based laboratory that grades lab grown diamonds and issues light-performance reports. AGS uses a 0–10 grading scale and is known for its cut grading methodology. Be more cautious of certificates from laboratories you cannot verify — some lesser-known labs issue consistently inflated grades.
How to Use a Certificate When Buying
A certificate is a starting point, not a buying decision. Use it to verify the basic facts of the stone, then assess the stone itself: does it look bright and lively? Is it visibly clean at arm's length? A jeweller who discourages questions about the certificate is a concern.
