Why Expats in Singapore Buy Their Engagement Ring Here Instead of Back Home

The Cost Comparison, Honestly

Ring budgets vary enormously by taste and stone choice, so treat these as broad reference points rather than an apples-to-apples calculation — but the general surveys are worth knowing. In the United States, recent surveys put the average engagement ring spend around USD 5,000–7,000, with a wider common range of roughly USD 5,000–10,000. In the United Kingdom, survey figures land lower, broadly between about GBP 1,500 and 2,500 depending on the source. In Australia, typical spend runs roughly AUD 5,000–12,000, averaging around AUD 6,000. In Singapore, a bespoke ring from us starts around SGD 2,000, with most couples spending SGD 3,000–8,000.

These numbers reflect different markets, currencies, and typical stone choices, so they're not a precise like-for-like comparison. What they do show is that Singapore isn't an expensive place to commission a ring relative to the US or Australia, and the bespoke model here often delivers more control over where your budget actually goes — stone versus setting versus finish — than buying off a shelf.

Lab-Grown Diamonds Are More Mainstream Here

Singapore has one of the highest rates of lab-grown diamond adoption in engagement rings globally, and the local market has moved quickly toward treating lab-grown as a mainstream, respectable choice rather than a compromise. If you're coming from a market where lab-grown is still a smaller niche, you'll likely find more depth of selection, more jewellers comfortable working with it, and better relative pricing on larger lab-grown stones here than you would at home.

The Bespoke Process Suits Someone Already Living Here

A fully custom ring typically involves two to three in-person touchpoints — the initial consultation, a design review, and final fitting — spread over several weeks. That's straightforward if you're already based in Singapore and inconvenient if you'd have to fly in specifically for it. Waiting until a trip home to buy off a shelf also means accepting whatever's in stock rather than something built around your specific taste and budget.

Buying locally also means you can see and approve the actual diamond — not just a certificate — before it's set, and review a 3D render before anything is made. That level of involvement is harder to get from overseas.

Certification Travels With You

GIA, IGI, and GCAL certification are internationally recognised standards, not Singapore-specific ones. A diamond graded by GIA in Singapore carries exactly the same standing at a jeweller, insurer, or appraiser in London, New York, or Sydney. If your posting here is temporary and you'll eventually relocate again, a ring bought and certified in Singapore isn't tied to this market — it's portable, verifiable, and insurable anywhere.

If You Relocate Before the Ring Is Finished

Postings change, and sometimes a commission is still in progress when a move comes up. This is manageable — either by completing final fitting on a return visit, or by having the finished piece shipped to you with proper insurance and documentation once it's ready. We cover the shipping side of this in more detail separately.
