Designing a 2.5ct Diamond Tennis Bracelet: A Bespoke Commission

Not every piece we make is an engagement ring. This one was a self-purchased milestone piece — a client marking a career milestone with a diamond tennis bracelet, commissioned the way we build everything: from a brief and a budget, not a catalogue.

The Brief

The starting point was simple: something that reads as a considered, everyday luxury piece rather than an occasion-only bracelet worn twice a year. She wanted it to feel substantial without tipping into showy — the kind of thing that works stacked with a watch on the opposite wrist for a client meeting, and equally at ease on its own for dinner.

The First Decision: Total Weight vs Stone Count

We started, as we do with every tennis bracelet commission, with the total-carat-weight-versus-stone-size conversation. At a 2.50ct total weight, we could build the line from roughly 45 stones at 0.055ct each for a fine, densely sparkling look, or from around 25 stones at 0.10ct each for more visible individual diamonds and a bolder line. She chose the middle path — 35 stones at approximately 0.07ct — which gave a continuous, even sparkle without the individual stones disappearing into a blur, which is the risk with very fine, high-stone-count lines.

Stone Selection: Consistency Over Everything

For a piece built from 35 individual diamonds, matching mattered more than any single stone's grade. We sourced from a single lot in the G colour, VS clarity range, all round brilliant, all cut to the same proportions. The reasoning: a single noticeably different stone in a continuous line is far more visible — and far more distracting — than a slightly lower average grade across a perfectly matched set. Lab-grown diamonds made this easier to execute well; sourcing 35 well-matched natural stones at this specification would have taken considerably longer and cost significantly more for a visual result the eye can't actually distinguish once set.

Setting and Metal

We used a shared-prong setting — each prong holds the edge of two adjacent stones rather than every stone getting its own independent four prongs — which keeps the line looking continuous and reduces the total metal visible between stones. The bracelet was set in platinum for durability under daily wear, with a box clasp and a folding safety lever, plus a figure-8 safety chain given the total value involved.

From Render to Wrist

As with every commission, she saw a full digital render before any stone was set, confirming the line's flex, the clasp placement, and how the graduated stone spacing would sit on her specific wrist size. Production took just under seven weeks from final sign-off, including sourcing the matched stone lot, which was the longest single step in the process.

The Result

What she has now is a piece she wears most days — which was the entire point. It wasn't designed as a special-occasion bracelet that lives in a safe; it was designed to be worn, cleaned, checked periodically, and lived in, which shaped nearly every decision along the way, from the shared-prong setting to the platinum build to the safety chain.
