Pear Diamond Ring Designs: A Guide to Settings and Styles

The pear diamond — also known as the teardrop cut — is one of the most distinctive and elegant diamond shapes available. Its elongated form and pointed tip create an instantly recognizable silhouette that flatters the finger and catches the light beautifully. Here's what you need to know before choosing your pear diamond ring.

The Shape and Its Characteristics

The pear cut combines the rounded brilliance of the round cut with the elongated form of the marquise. It has 58 facets that maximize light return, giving it exceptional sparkle. The pointed tip requires careful prong protection — a V-tip prong or a dedicated pointed prong is essential to protect this vulnerable area.

Setting Styles for Pear Diamonds

Solitaire: The pear diamond shines brightest in a simple solitaire. With nothing to compete with, the stone's unique shape becomes the full focus. A thin, elegant band in white gold or platinum complements without distracting.

Halo: A halo of small diamonds around the pear stone amplifies its perceived size and adds extra brilliance. This is the most popular setting choice for pear diamonds as it softens the pointed tip and adds a romantic quality.

East-West: Mounting the pear stone horizontally (east-west) rather than vertically is a modern, architectural choice that creates a very different look — wider across the finger rather than elongating it.

Orientation: Which Way Should the Point Face?

Traditionally, the pointed tip faces toward the fingernail (away from the hand). Some prefer it reversed, pointing toward the wrist. There's no right answer — it comes down to personal preference and what feels right on your hand.

Pairing with a Wedding Band

Pear diamonds work well with contour or curved wedding bands that follow the ring's silhouette. A straight band will sit away from the engagement ring due to the curved profile — so a custom contoured band is usually the better choice. See our guide on pairing engagement rings with wedding bands.
