Custom Engagement Ring Design: Round Diamond & Platinum
A round diamond in a platinum setting is one of the most enduring combinations in fine jewelry. The round brilliant's symmetrical brilliance and platinum's natural white color create a ring that's both technically optimal and aesthetically timeless. Here's what goes into getting this combination right.
The Round Brilliant in Platinum
Platinum is the preferred metal for D-F color diamonds because it reflects no warmth into the stone. A yellow or rose gold setting creates a subtle warm reflection in the diamond that can affect the stone's apparent color. With platinum, what you see is the stone's true color in its purest form.
For near-colorless diamonds (G-H), white gold is a perfectly good alternative and costs less than platinum. But for colorless diamonds (D-F), platinum is the setting that does full justice to the stone.
Setting Options
Classic 6-prong solitaire: The reference design. Six prongs hold the round brilliant at six equidistant points, creating a perfectly round frame. It's the most recognizable engagement ring silhouette in the world for a reason — it works.
4-prong solitaire: Slightly more modern. Exposes more of the diamond. The four prongs create a diamond-shaped frame around the stone rather than a round one, giving a slightly different orientation to the setting.
Cathedral solitaire: The band arches upward to meet the setting, elevating the stone and creating a more dramatic profile. The cathedral arch also adds structural rigidity to the setting.
Band Profiles
A flat band sits low on the finger and has a clean, modern feel. A rounded or comfort-fit band is slightly curved on the inside for improved daily comfort. A knife-edge band tapers to a ridge along the top, creating a distinctive silhouette from the side.
